Making space in our lives for hobbies can often seem like a puzzle we just can’t fit together. Think about what you like to do in your free time—when you get off of work, when you wake up early, or once you’ve finished school for the day. And let's be honest, indulging in a Desperate Housewives marathon while nestled in bed might be a tempting answer, but we're aiming for something more here. So, in all seriousness, what are you doing to not just better yourself, but feel better overall?

We should always be looking for ways to tend to our physical and mental well-being. Don’t know where to start? Let us inspire you! This guide is meant to help you find accessible hobbies that blend physical health with mental clarity. Beyond serving as things to do in your leisure time, these activities become intentional steps towards a healthier life. Read on for our favorite hobbies to get into this year.

Our Favorite Hobbies for Physical Health:

Yoga and Meditation

Engage in yoga, a dual practice that intertwines physical fortitude with mental focus. Beyond its reputation for enhancing flexibility and strength, yoga embodies a holistic approach, offering moments of mental tranquility through meditation.

Hiking or Nature Walks

We are huge fans of escaping into nature with hikes or casual walks. It’s basically a remedy for cardiovascular well-being and muscular strength. Any outdoor endeavor is a great way to practice mindfulness, ease stress, and forge a connection with the natural world.

Dance Classes

Enroll in dance classes for a fun blend of physical vigor and emotional expression. Beyond the cardiovascular perks and enhanced coordination, dancing becomes a cathartic release. Whether salsa, ballroom, or even ballet, try however many dance genres you like!

Swimming

Swimming is incredibly therapeutic—and it’s a full-body workout with minimal impact. The rhythmic strokes not only strengthen the heart but also let you have some quality time for peace or meditation during your session.

Pilates

Focus on core strength, flexibility, and balance through Pilates. This type of fitness hobby is incredibly easy to get started with since you need minimal equipment as a beginner. You can easily find full-length sessions to follow along with on YouTube or TikTok as well!

Cycling

If you’re looking for simplicity, cycling is the way to go. It’s a low-impact endeavor that improves cardiovascular health and clears mental cobwebs. Just 30 minutes on a bike is a great place for a mental reset.

Rock Climbing

This one’s for the daredevil gals out there. Rock climbing is a pursuit that builds physical resilience. While it takes time to master, the physical and mental benefits are worth it.

Our Favorite Hobbies for Mental Health:

Meditation Practices

Cultivating mindfulness and guided meditation techniques offers not just mental clarity but stress reduction and emotional balance as well. There is a plethora of apps and books to help you get started, but we especially love Headspace if you’re a beginner looking for some guided sessions.

Journaling

Putting thoughts onto paper through journaling can be incredibly cathartic. It’s the ultimate medium for self-reflection and emotional expression. Whether you’re just writing down random thoughts or starting bullet journaling, this practice enhances your emotional intelligence and fosters self-awareness for improved mental health.

Reading and Book Club Participation

If you aren’t much of a reader, we encourage you to do some exploring. Even if you prefer magazines to books, just the activity in itself is great for cerebral stimulation. If you love books and want to share this passion, consider joining a book club either online or in person. These activities encourage reflection and nurture a deeper understanding of the world.

Creative Writing or Poetry

If journaling isn’t your style, try to channel your emotions into creative outlets like writing or poetry. This is another great activity for self-expression and exploring personal thoughts.

Mindful Coloring or Art

Remember how fun coloring was when you were a kid? Art doesn’t mean ambitious oil painting or pottery sculpting (but feel free to explore those as well!). Simply doodling in a coloring book can be a therapeutic practice that reduces stress while getting those creative juices flowing.

Nature Retreats or Solo Travel

We encourage all gals to take introspective journeys with nature retreats or solo travel. Solitude becomes a catalyst for personal growth and deep reflection. When you’re on your own and taking on new challenges, ideas, and embracing self-discovery, your mental well-being skyrockets.

Learning a New Language

Stimulate cognitive functions through language acquisition. Learning a new language not only fosters cultural exploration but expands perspectives, enhances problem-solving skills, and provides a mentally enriching experience. This is also the perfect start to planning the solo trip we mentioned before!

Incorporating hobbies for physical and mental health shouldn’t be a luxury! These activities should be a set part of our daily routines, and it’s up to us to invest in bettering our lives, both mentally and physically. Whether you lean towards the grounding activity of yoga or find comfort in the written word through journaling, we hope you pick up one (or even a few!) of these hobbies this year.
