As summer is slowly coming to a close, we know you're excited for the chic layering and bulky cable knit sweaters that come with Autumn. There’s no deficit of possibilities: think sleek, long leather jackets and thick, natural denim bellbottoms. Not only is Autumn the season to really show up and show out in your best outfit staples, but it’s also the season (other than Winter) that requires maximum closet space to make sure all of your garments are organized and wrinkle-free. Though it can be hard to find the space for the bulky faux fur coats and the surplus of sweaters necessary to stay warm and fashionable during Fall, worry no more. We have a comprehensive guide that’ll let you in on all the organizational and minimalist secrets that’ll leave your closet begging for more garments (but not really). If you’re trying to maximize space in your cozy studio apartment or are trying to split space evenly with your significant other, this guide’s for you. Nothing does the trick like a few points on organizational habits and minimalism!

Rummage Through Out-lived Pieces

I know, I know. It’s a little daunting to think about letting go of the sweater that you had your first kiss in as a teenager or the wide leg denim trousers you’re hoping you’ll find use for. At the end of the day, it’s important to clean out what no longer serves you. If you haven’t touched a piece in over a year (including not having worn it last Autumn), consider trying it on and being realistic with yourself. If you think the piece could find much more love in someone else’s closet, donate it to a thrift store or consignment shop. Some thrift stores will compensate you for some good clothing, so this could double as a little money-making side hustle.

Separate the clothing into three piles, like you would when you’re moving out of a home into a new one: definite keeps, maybes, and donations. It’s pretty self explanatory, but separating all of your self-proclaimed “Fall must-haves” might not be must-haves at all. Having piles physically in front of you might help you realize just how much junk you’ve been holding onto for whatever reason. A clean, reinvented closet can bring you physical cleanliness and mental clarity. Going into a cold, dark season can be tolling on our mental health, so removing some clutter can remedy that for sure. Bulky items tend to make more clutter, and you’ll wanna save some extra closet space for when you unavoidably buy some clothing for yourself when you begin your holiday shopping. Just remember — invest in timeless, quality pieces! You won’t regret it.

Utilize Closet Organizers

This one seems like a no-brainer, but some ladies out there don’t know where to start when it comes to what works the best in the type of space that they have. Do you have a spacious closet? Standing clothes rack? Dressers and drawers? Under the bed storage? Whichever you do have, and even if you have multiple, we’ve listed a few that might be able to work and at a pretty good price point.

Hanging Closet Organizer and Storage, 6-Shelf Closet Hanging Storage Shelves, Grey

These types of organizers are great for the gals who have true closets but don’t have enough space to put everything on a hanger. They’re thin, so you can fit multiple inside one closet if need be, and the cubes offer optimal organization when separating clothes either by color or by use (outerwear, sweaters, shirts, pants, etc). Though the bulkier clothes might take up a lot of space in these little cubbies, having multiple of this type of organizer will still save you so much space and organize all of your belongings in a clean, neat way.

6 Pack-Closet-Organizers-and-Storage, Magic-Hangers-Space-Saving-for-Clothes, Closer-Organizer-for-Closet-Organization, Space-Saver-Hanger-Organizer-for-Multipurpose, Dorm-Room-Essentials

Similar to the first organizer, this one fits in a regular closet. The fun part about it is that you can fit seven clothing items on hangers vertically rather than horizontally, which optimizes the horizontal space along the pole in your closet. This is perfect for layering tops over one another. I would say putting coats and heavier items on the top and bottom of each hook would make it much easier to stay organized, but you can always mess around with what works for you.

SpaceAid Drawer Organizer for Clothes, 12 Pack Dresser Drawer Organizer Bins, Closet Organizers and Storage Dividers for Clothing, Underwear, Socks

These are perfect for both under the bed storage and dressers/drawers if you think they’d fit. This is perfect not only for undergarments and delicates, but for big, bulky sweaters that tend to still take up too much closet space even with hanging organizers. I know some ladies prefer to keep a clean, open space under the bed, but between cost of living going up and sharing spaces with our partners, we have to make some sacrifices. This is a clean, minimalistic way to keep all of the clothes you know and love without having all that clutter out in the open.

Vacuum Seal What You Don’t Need

Not everything you wear in the summer can serve a dual purpose. You’re not wearing your denim cut-offs and multiple tank tops throughout the winter. Like my first suggestion, I recommend making piles of clothing that can be divided into warm and cold weather friendly, and only warm weather friendly. Sometimes doing a fashion show for yourself and seeing what pieces can be considered versatile is just what you need (and you can invite some friends over to help you out). Vacuum sealing clothes saves space and prevents unnecessary clutter. That’s what it’s all about, after all: clearing out what no longer serves you. Maximizing closet space does wonders for your wallet, apartment/home, and most importantly, your mental health.
