Among the summer swimwear recommendations you might see all over the internet, we’re sure you’ve been seeing tankinis make their way back into the 2024 swimsuit trend rotation. You might even remember the tankini as a mere stepping stone to the bikini (when your parents thought you simply weren’t old enough to wear one). Though the tankini style was the less coveted option when we all wanted to shed our childlike innocence, we at Gazette Gal believe the tankini is reminiscent of girlhood in its purest form. The bold patterns, technicolor hues, and indisputably flattering silhouette. Lest we forget, the tankini style is likely one of the most comfortable options for women this summer because it's made up of a cute, swim-safe tank and comfy boxer short bottoms. There’s no hassle when we want to make a quick, stress-free trip to the restroom unlike when we wear one pieces; the crashing ocean waves will not untie our straps like those of string bikinis. Let's get further into tankinis and why we just adore them.

Back in the Trend Cycle

I started seeing several videos a day this past month of content influencers joining the conversation regarding the re-emergence of the tankini. It honestly felt like I was watching a fashion revolution occur in real time because I hadn’t seen the Y2K-esque style be embraced so quickly and positively since I was building sandcastles and scoping the shore for seashells as a little girl. It seems as though the common consensus is that tankinis are the gold mine of swimwear; they’re modest, convenient, and provide exceptional coverage without sacrificing chic style. The tankini is inclusive — and in 2024, this is a must because, at this point in our ever-developing world, exclusivity is inexcusable. Though there has been some debate online about not falling victim to fleeting style trends such as this, we think this style is here to stay.

Versatility

The tankini silhouette boasts fashion-forwardness due to the multiple stylistic approaches the design offers. The bottom half of the suits are typically bikini bottoms, board shorts, or swim skirts (which is my personal favorite of the three.) The top half of the suits range from sports bra-esque tops, to mid rise tanks, all the way through to full coverage sleeveless bodices. They possess the "Double F," which is a trendy way of saying that the tankini design is both fashionable and functional. As a result of the different styles offered, whichever top or bottom you decide to wear under the sun drastically changes the silhouette to whatever you desire.

Not only are tankinis standalone outfits, but the top or bottom of the swimwear can be worn with the rest of the non-swimsuit pieces that live in your closet. With tankinis, you can leave the beach and hit the boardwalk restaurants without worrying about bringing an extra set of clothes. Opt for a pair of linen bottoms or a chic, gauze coverup to complement the bold patterns and colors of the swimsuit. The possibilities are endless because of the tankini’s versatility, so don’t be afraid to get playful with it!

Comfort, Modesty, and Coverage

Tankinis have been revolutionizing swimwear for adult customers recently because of how inclusive the style is for multiple different body types. Women with larger busts often have trouble finding bikini tops that are supportive in their bust area because, let’s face it — bikinis are often on the smaller side both on the top and the bottom of their silhouettes. With tankinis, larger busted women are less worried about sharing a bit too much with other beach or pool goers because the swimwear offers many different styles ranging from high neck halters, to high-V racerbacks. Additionally, many women simply just want a suit that is swim safe without compromising their own modesty, comfortability, or safety when it comes to the possibility of a crisp sunburn on their midsection. In the era of more adults becoming sun-smart, the tankini is an ideal candidate to cover up as much as possible while maintaining convenience and comfort. If this sounds like you, consider ditching the string bikinis and opt for something that aligns better with your needs and desires when it comes to water attire.

Tankini Picks from our Team

J.Crew Factory Strapless Tankini Top

The high neck on this tankini top is comfortable and cute — no need to worry about outfit mishaps when you have optional straps and a fitted bodice. Talk about chic.

Old Navy Knotted A-Line Tankini Swim Top

Who doesn’t adore a fit and flare? The moderate deep V paired with the airy, loose fit around the midsection allows you to jump into the waves, play a round of beach volleyball, or utilize it as a top with a flattering pair of denim shorts. Giving #hotgirl!

Frankies Bikinis Penelope Tankini Bikini Top

Though this is a bikini/tankini hybrid style, I found this might be a friendly choice to those who still might want to get some sun but want their bust supported and complemented. The lettuce trim is back in for 2024, and the delicate floral pattern only makes this suit even more darling.

Ralph Lauren Floral Surplice Tankini Top

The sweetheart neckline coupled with the coquette-esque florals make this tankini one of my personal number one picks because the pattern is just bold enough to my liking, but also offers ultimate coverage when the UV index is quite daunting. Also, this top with a linen maxi would be to die for.

Cupshe Paisley Print Tankini Top & Short Bottoms Set

Though most tankinis that exist in the 2024 trend cycle offer bikini bottoms (and the lucky few who thrift swim skirts are envied everywhere) these board shorts offer super mobility if you’re looking for extra coverage on your legs. No chaffing here!

Athleta Triangle Tankini A-C

Strappy backs are sultry, and the modest fit of the bodice give you extra comfort when you're looking to show some skin and style without compromising bust support you want or the modesty you prefer.

Staud Francesca Bikini Top Blue Toile

We're sure you're familiar with coastal grandmother chic — this tankini speaks for itself. It's giving summer in the Hamptons, bike riding to the next beach front.
