Gazette Gal

Spooky season is upon us. Who said Halloween is reserved for children only? Every weekend in October is another opportunity to show up and show out in the most hauntingly chic costumes. Let’s face it: dressing up as something or someone else for the night is exhilarating and fun. Halloween costumes have no age limit. But, as we grow older and wiser, it’s time to retire the Princess Peach getup from Party City and pick out some more chic, niche, and intentional costumes.

That is, without sacrificing the fun of it all! Our interests have shifted; the person or thing that we wanted to transform into when we were children no longer suits us. We’re ditching the face paint and running to grab multi-functional garments that we won’t have to ditch come November 1. Ever thought of dressing up as your favorite cocktail? What about Princess Peach, but with clothing items you can also wear out on the town? If you’ve been raiding Pinterest in hopes of some Halloween inspiration, look no further. We’ve rounded up four DIY costume ideas for the ladies who want to look and feel their best without sacrificing their creativity this Halloween. We’ve included everything you need to build the costumes yourself so you know exactly what to grab before your spooky Halloweekend endeavors.

Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany’s"

Who doesn't love a good 1960s moment? Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly is nothing short of a bombshell sensation. Hepburn's character is rebellious, eccentric, and no-nonsense. Isn't that what we all aspire to be?

Not only is "Breakfast at Tiffany's" a cult classic film, but this outfit in particular symbolizes everything Hepburn's character embodies. You're posh, you're proper, and you love to have fun. The great thing about this DIY is that you'd likely wear everything again in your day-to-day, possibly with the exception of the tiara (but feel free to rock that, too). We opted for a calmer pearl layering necklace that'll complement any elevated look you desire to wear in the future, and the sling-back kitten heels are currently trending. This costume definitely gives off "The Princess Diaries" vibe too, if that's something you fancy! Shop this exact look below.

Princess Peach

Remember how I said we're retiring the Party City Princess Peach getup? That's only because we're looking for something a bit more sultry and mature to reflect how we've grown!

If you haven't been living under a rock, Princess Peach is Mario's love and confidante who, in most cases, needs to be saved by him. Don't get it twisted, though — Princess Peach can hold her own! This darling look if perfect for anyone who wants something playful and doesn't take itself too seriously, but doesn't want to sacrifice femininity in the highest degree. Bubble skirts have been trending this year, so this bubblegum pink bottom should do the trick without giving off a childish vibe. Strappy ballet flats are a no-brainer this fall, and who can deny their love of a For Love & Lemons bustier? Not me! Of course, other accessories are optional, but we linked those out too if you're interested in grabbing this entire look. You can shop this adorable number below.

Espresso Martini

If there's one thing I love most, it's an espresso martini. The cocktail is in its hay-day, and for good reason. It's smooth, seductive, and can eprk even the most sleepy gals up for a night out on the town. This is definitely a more niche, thoughtful look; we recommend this to ladies who don't want to go all out on the spooky holiday, but still want to feel a little festive.

This look is basically a regular outfit disguised as a niche, eccentric disguise. I know all too well that complicated costume wardrobe malfunctions during Halloweekend are stressful. So, as an alternative, try ditching the over-the-top looks and dress up as your favorite cocktail for Halloween! You might even have everything you need just behind your closet door. If you're interested in sporting this smooth and rich costume, you can find everything you need right here.

Wednesday Addams

Jenna Ortega's "Wednesday" performance is still being applauded and the noise hasn't died down, that's for sure. What's more spooky than "The Addams Family"? The style is quite literally a 2024 goth phenomenon. The true Wednesday fit is definitely leaning toward the preppy side that with the collared shirt and cuffs, but is transformed into a haunting (yet darling) symbolic outfit because of the character's pig tails and patent Mary Janes.

You can find the look almost anywhere, but layers often get in the way when you're at a party or bar. I mean, the last thing youwanttodo is take off multiple layers of clothing when you're three espresso martinis in! This dress from French Connection is a safe option that won't make you feel restricted at your costume party. We added some kneehighs and MJs to complete the look, and additionally, a black lippie and polish to ensure you get the perfect shade of the darkest black. FYI: The liquid lip is transfer-proof and vegan!
